Pre University Program
This Pre-University Program prepares Canadian and international students to gain admission to post-secondary education. In order for students to apply for university, they are required to earn six (6) Grade 12/pre-university credits.
The program is exceptional at expediting interested students to University. The grade 12 university bound program allows students take courses toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). OSSD is a pre-requisite for university and college entrance. Students can complete our Pre-University program in 6-12 months, depending on the pace that works for each individual student.
To be accepted in this program, international students must have one of the following: a TOEFL score of 480 and above, completion of the College of Toronto’s Level 5 ESL, or successful completion of the College of Toronto’s English language placement test. Canadian students must have completed a set of grade 11 academic courses. Our pre-university program is your gateway to universities in Canada, USA, UK, Australia and elsewhere. Guidance counselors advise students about selecting appropriate courses to enable them to qualify for university entrance in specific program and/or enter specific careers. The students will be provided detailed information about many post-secondary programs and their entrance requirements. Throughout the year, the students may visit numerous universities and colleges to learn more about the programs they offer.
University Placement Plan (UPP) ®
We provide 12 essential steps to ensure our students’ successful entrance to universities!
1. We develop a customized study plan for each and every College of Toronto student
2. We work with the students to explore their various career and education options
3. We help research and select the most appropriate university or college, based on student’s strengths, interests, and career goals
4. We assist the students in applying to preferred colleges and/or universities, ensuring that all the required documentation is completed, in order and submitted well before deadlines.
5. We remind and help students to complete scholarship applications.
6. We help students obtain early letters of acceptance from universities, if feasible
7. We organize a trip to the annual fair of colleges and universities, which enables them to obtain first- hand information on admission requirements, university programs and campus living.
8. We organize student visits to universities and colleges that they wish to attend.
9. We help students with online application to colleges and universities
10. Upon request, we provide letters of recommendation to students from the Principal, teachers and other staff members
11. We arrange personal interviews with registrars, faculty deans and admissions officers at universities or colleges, whenever necessary
12. We help students prepare for English language proficiency tests, such as TOEFL, CALE, etc.
Compulsory Credits (18)
Students must earn the following 18 compulsory credits to obtain the Ontario Secondary School Diploma:
4 Credits in English*
3 Credits in Mathematics (at least 1 credit in gr. 11 or 12)
2 Credits in Science
1 Credit in Canadian History (grade 10)
1 Credit in Canadian Geography (grade 9)
1 Credit in the Arts
1 Credit in Health & Physical Education
1 Credit in French as a Second Language
0.5 Credit in Career Studies
0.5 Credit in Civics
Students must also earn at least one credit from each of the following groups:
1 additional credit in English, French as a second language, French as a native language, or a classical or an international language, or social sciences and the humanities, or Canadian and world studies, or guidance and career studies, or cooperative education**
1 additional credit in health & physical education, or the arts, or business studies, or cooperative education**
1 additional credit in science or technological education, or cooperative education**
* A maximum of 3 credits in English as a second language (ESL) or English literacy development (ELD) may be counted towards the 4 compulsory credits in English, but the fourth must be a credit earned for a grade 12 compulsory English course
** A maximum of 2 credits in cooperative education can count as compulsory credits
12 Optional Credits***
In addition to the 18 compulsory credits, students must earn 12 optional credits. Students may earn these credits by successfully completing courses that they have selected from the courses listed as available in the school course calendar.
